The bleeding heart or botanically is known as dicentra. The name came from  the Greek word dicentra translates to "two sharp points."They are native to China and Japan and are members of the poppy family.

They are remarkably simple to grow and the perfect choice for the flowering garden. They bloom from spring to early summer depending on where you live, they grow to a height of 3 feet.

They produce stems with the most exquisite locket-shaped bloom that hangs down and puts on such a sweet presentation.

They produce pink, dark red, and white flowers in a cluster. They have the appearance of heartbleed.

In the hotter, drier summer months, it tends to turn yellow and their foliage is dyed back and goes dormant leading to empty space in the garden.

Their roots would be alive if the area was not disturbed, and roots could be divided quite effectively in the early spring and late fall. In the next spring, they will grow back and produce bright, rich, soft green foliage.

They prefer a lot of sunlight and roots that are moderately damp. They can live up to two weeks if the plant stem is cut and placed in a water vase. Deer, rabbits and other animals should not consume this plant since it is poisonous in all sections.
